Plant a Tree

The Eco-Club is hard at work planning for Earth Week. We have been given the opportunity to receive free tree seedlings for our LKS families. The tree seedlings will come in a 100%  biodegradable bag and are less than 9 inches in height. The trees will last approximately 3 weeks inside the bag and then can be planted outside. If your family is interested in receiving a tree seedling, please email Mrs. Jennifer Clarke, our parent rep, at: jen@dineen.com stating your interest, name, child’s name and teacher’s name. The deadline for a submission is January 31st, 2014. Thank you for taking advantage of this fun program. We would also like to thank Mrs. Clarke for organizing this experience and for Mr. Clarke for the sponsorship.

LKS can Dance!

This past week, the students in grades 1 to 8 enjoyed learning some new dance moves as they participated in two dance classes.  The halls were filled with the sound of music and the students' laughter.

Officer Rich

The students in Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Younger, Mrs. Gibson, Mrs. Wilson, and Ms. Kim's class had a visit from Officer Rich Diodati on Wednesday, January 15th.  He spoke about how and when to call 911 as well as what to do if you get lost.  Special activity sheets were given to the students that will help reinforce these important life-lessons.  Many of the students were able to speak with Officer Rich during recess and some students even had a chance to sit in his police cruiser!

Looking ahead to next week, the students will be participating in special dance classes.  I will be posting pictures of this great learning experience.

Food Drive
During the month of December, students focused on the character attributes of Kindness and Caring.  The entire LKS community has demonstrated not only kindness and caring but also empathy and compassion as they came together to collect 3120 pounds of food !  That amount of food can feed a single person for almost three years! Thank you to all who supported this fantastic demonstration of community unity and generosity.

Thank You
On a personal note, I want to thank the LKS students, staff, and parents for welcoming me with such enthusiasm and support.  I continue to feel blessed to be a part of such an incredible school with such dedicated staff and engaged and respectful students.

Happy New Year

We often see the beginning of a new year as an opportunity to start something new and exciting.  This is certainly the case for me as I start as the new Vice-Principal at LKS.  I am thrilled to be joining the LKS family and I am honoured to be a part of such a dynamic and engaged learning community.

Over the next few weeks I am looking forward to visiting classrooms, getting to know students, staff, parents, and community members, and learning more about what makes LKS so special.  Please feel free to introduce yourself to me either in person or via email.  I strongly believe in the power of open and honest communication.  The old adage of having an open door policy certainly applies so please feel free to contact me.

I hope to use this blog to share with you the learning and inquiry that is happening at LKS, as well as important information and resources that will support your family as we join together on this journey of learning and creating critical thinkers and problem solvers.
